Senior
Football Clubs
in the East Kilbride area
Although there are no senior football clubs (that's soccer
clubs for our North American friends!) based in East Kilbride, there are
plenty clubs playing within very easy travelling distance of the town.
Rangers and Celtic
Top of the list have to be Rangers,
who play at Ibrox Park in Glasgow, and Celtic,
based at Parkhead in Glasgow.
It's an unusual season when one or both of these clubs is
not challenging for the Scottish Championship and the Scottish Cups.
Both clubs are also regular contenders in Europe and both
have been European winners in the past.
Rangers and Celtic are up with the best clubs in the United
Kingdom and Europe.
It is also possible to hold shares on both of these clubs.
Other Glasgow Football Clubs
Queens Park is the gentleman's football team. Established in a time when
sporting etiquette was all important and people played football for the
love of it, Queens Park is Scotland's oldest football club, formed in
1867, and remains an amateur football club while playing in the Scottish
professional leagues. Home for Queen Park Football Club is Hampden Park,
Scotland's national football stadium. In the first Scotland England international
in 1872, Queens Park players provided the entire Scottish team and that
same year Queens Park played in the first ever English Football Association
Cup. On two occasions Queens Park reached the finals of that competition,
in 1884 and 1885.
Partick Thistle are the team for the north and west of the City of Glasgow,
playing at Firhill Park in the Maryhill area of the city.
Lanarkshire Clubs
Hamilton Accies
Hamilton Accies are possibly the closest senior club to the East Kilbride
area, playing in the nearby town of Hamilton.
Motherwell
Motherwell are based just the other side of the River Clyde from Hamilton
and are a very competitive club, perhaps currently most notorious for
beating Celtic on the last day of the season to give Rangers the league
championship! Motherwell play at Fir Park, Motherwell.
Airdrie United
Airdrie United play in the town of Airdrie
Albion Rovers
Albion Rovers play at Cliftonhill Stadium in the town of Coatbridge.
Clyde
Originally a Glasgow club, playing at Shawfield Stadium, Clyde today
play at Broadwood Stadium in Cumbernauld.
